What is MELT?

Effective March 01, 2019, drivers seeking a Class 1 (tractor-trailer) or Class 2 (bus) license are required to complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) to apply for their license.

ALBERTA MELT PROGRAM DETAILS:

  • Training includes a government-mandated number of training hours in-class, in-yard, and in-vehicle.
  • Standardized curriculum taught at all licensed Alberta driving schools.
  • Knowledge and road tests for Class 1 drivers will be comprised of the new curriculum.

Who needs to complete the MELT Program?

  • All new Class 1 commercial drivers
  • Out-of-Province drivers holding a Class 1 license for less than 12 months (only for provinces without a MELT program)
  • Farmers - may apply for an extension until Nov. 30, 2020
  • School Bus Drivers - may apply for an extension until Jul 31, 2020

MELT Program Requirements.


  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold any non-probationary driver's license from Alberta. If your current license is part of the GDL Program, you are not eligible for a Class 1 License.
  • Have an approved Alberta driver's medical examination report completed by a physician
